Martial arts essence that got subdivided

Although, Japanese martial arts are known with over 10 variety of names such as juujutsu, Kenpou, Sappou, Ninjyutsu, Ashige, Hakuda, Kumiuchi, and many more, 100 plus year old Juujutsu literature from Meiji period states that, in the olden days, they are all originally a same art with complete method consisted of striking, joint manipulation, throwing, locking and other techniques.

With popularization of martial arts through history, its safety and competitive use were considered, while specificity of each arts were emphasized, methodology has been disassembled and striking technique were eliminated to spread as Judo and Aikido.

Along the way, Okinawan fighting art which was originally a Ryukyu Kingdom’s Tee, that got transformed into Toude, now known as Karate was specialized into striking combat art to be imported into mainland Japan.

As a result, modern Japanese martial arts generally remain segregated to Karate for striking art, Judo and 日本柔術 for throwing and joint manipulating art, Aikidou which puts emphasis on KI, spirituality and momentum, and Kobujyutsu  for weapons, to be taught separately.

However, also as indicated in old literature, Japanese martial arts until the Meiji period, did not exist disassembled as how it is currently, it was more complete method that include throw, locks, joint manipulation and Atemi or strikes.
